Imagine going on a job interview and being told you could not be hired because there is already someone working there who looks like you. You might think that establishment was weird or odd for denying you work for such reasons. Nevertheless, that is exactly how the modeling industry works for women of color and those too short or wider than a clothes hanger. As long as one or two are models in those categories are working that is deemed enough representation. However, one model is hoping to change that notion. African Model’s Black Mirror Fashion Diversity Project Recreates Ad Campaigns

Black Mirror is the brain child of model, Deddeh Howard. During her career Howard experienced castings similar to the scenario mentioned at the outset. As a result, she is now dedicated to helping to change and shake things up a bit. She explains Black Mirror stating,

“The Black Mirror has nothing to do with [being] racist, it’s about diversity. It’s about representation, it’s about fairness and respect. How many Asian models are there? Indian models?! Native American models? Or short models, plus size models? You get the point. It’s so sad to see that every time this topic comes up, it’s always a war.

You got to understand Raffael and I are an interracial couple, we worked on this project together and always saw ourselves as one, not black or white, and that’s powerful. So it shouldn’t be all negative. Again, all I wanted is to do something positive and inspiring about my race. So we all need to pause and think! Let’s unite not divide.”

The inspiration behind wanting more change is nothing new for Deddeh. Actually, these thoughts reach back into her childhood. How we are raised really does play a part in shaping our outlook as adults. Howard explains,

“Growing up in Africa, I knew nothing about black and white, we’re all equal, it was united we stand! At least that’s what my parents taught me and that’s what I believe in. I believe we can be whoever we want to be, so don’t let anyone [say] you can’t be what you want to be. If they can do it so can you! It’s about time we stand up together. Dream and believe. I’m personally fighting for more diversity especially more black models to be seen on bill boards, movies, TV commercials, advertisements etc. for us all.”
