Beauty Myth: Black Women Don’t Need Sunscreen

black women skin

For many years a myth regarding sunscreen has been apart of the beauty world, simply put: black women do not need to wear sunscreen. It has been believed that if you possess or have a darker skin tone that your skin magically protects itself from the sun’s harmful rays. Is this truly the case?

This beauty myth is completely false. If you walk outside, sunlight will hit you and your skin will be affected. Now, this doesn’t mean that you need to become like a “dark seeker” from the film, I Am Legend. All you have to do to maintain your gorgeous brown skin is to protect it. Every day that you plan on being exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time, it best to apply a sunscreen product that has SPF 15 formula. Nevertheless, even if you are not in the sun constantly it is still recommended to get in the habit of applying this skin saving product.

Black Hair Growth: Don’t Forget the Vitamin D

Serena Williams Hair

Healthy hair growth always seems to be a hot topic among black women. We all seem to know the basics: eat right, massage the scalp and keep heat styling to a minimum. However, there’s smaller tips and tricks that shouldn’t be ignored either.

Never forget that it may not seem like it, but your hair is in fact always growing. It’s things such as breakage and hair thinning that can make it seem like your tresses are constantly remaining in the same state. A lesser known cause for hair thinning is a deficiency of Vitamin D. Sadly, studies are showing more and more than many suffer from a Vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D has a direct baring on hair growth. If you fail to take in enough Vitamin D, your hair growth may become stunted and hair shedding will increase. So then, do not stunt the growth of your locks by forgetting the Vitamin D.

Not Sure How to Get Your Vitamin D? Of course you can get the majority of what you need from our wonderful sun up in the sky. Nevertheless, the rest can be consumed through the foods that you eat.

2014 Hair Trend: Get The Wet Look of Spring 2014 Ready-to-Wear 3.1 Phillip Lim Collection

The Spring 2014 Ready-to-Wear 3.1 Phillip Lim Collection was all about the Wet Look. If you have a perm or have a less curly texture this is a great trend to try. To get this look try Eco Styler Moroccan Argan Oil Styling. But make sure you don’t over do it because it can cake up your hair and look very flaky. Another alternative is to wear extensions or a sew-in, this way your natural hair is not taxed by the hair products and gives you a protective hair style while still staying in trend.
